The MCSD is Microsoft's premier certification for software development and demonstrates an individual's ability to create, deploy, maintain and support desktop and distributed applications. This encompasses analyzing customers requirements, conceptual design, creating client applications, COM components, and binding to data sources. The certification includes desktop applications and multi-tier enterprise applications and measures an individual's ability to utilize development skill such as GUI creation, navigational design, data input and validation, as well as to access and manipulate a data source. The certification also tests an individual's ability to assess the impact of potential design elements on performance, maintainability, extensibility, scalability, availability, and security.
